Fort Mulligan

Constructed in 1863 by Union troops just on the outskirts of Petersburg, Fort Mulligan was used to quarter troops guarding against Confederate raids on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Due to an impending attack by nearly 5,000 confederate soldiers, the fort was evacuated in January 1864. Today, a walking trail is available for travelers to get a first-hand look at the fort.
