By Tim, Fly Fishing Guide at Harman’s Luxury Log Cabins
Fall is one of my favorite times to guide guests on the North Fork River here at Harman’s Luxury Log Cabins. As the Allegheny Mountains shift into their autumn colors, the trout seem to sense the season’s change, too. Cooler water, fewer crowds, and brilliant foliage all come together to make fall fly fishing in West Virginia something truly special.
Why Fall Fishing is Different
By late September, water temperatures drop into the sweet spot for rainbow and brown trout. The cooler weather makes the fish more active during daylight hours, so you don’t have to be on the river at sunrise to catch a great bite. Fall also brings fewer anglers, which means more solitude on our private access waters—just you, the river, and maybe a few deer crossing in the morning mist.
What Flies Are Working Now
In autumn, trout feed heavily to bulk up before winter. On the North Fork, I’ve had the best success with:
- Nymphs: Pheasant Tail, Prince, and Hare’s Ear in smaller sizes (16–20).
Pro tip: bring a mix of patterns and be ready to switch. The trout can be picky one day and eager to chase streamers the next.
The Scenery is Half the Catch
Even if you’re not landing trophy trout, fall fishing here is about the whole experience. From late September through October, the ridges above our cabins turn crimson, gold, and orange. Mornings often start with fog curling off the river, and afternoons glow with low golden sunlight. Guests often tell me that fall fishing at Harman’s feels like stepping into a postcard.
Tips for a Successful Fall Trip
- Layer Up: Mornings are crisp, afternoons can warm—dress in layers for comfort.
